Throughout my journey of my final project, I've met many people and shared interesting conversations starting by one simple question. This project specifically revolves around my grandma and how she has mentored me through the kitchen and showed me her ways of cooking. My whole life I've practiced this essential life skill and felt extremely passionated about it. It wasn't until the beginning of the school year that I realized many of my friends and peers didn't know how to cook. Which made me realize... Are college students prepared enough to be living on their own? In this project I will provide photographs of meals people on campus have made and just meals in general, audio of two interviewees I decided to interview, infographics showing a beginners guide of cooking tips and data of students in Linfield not knowing how to cook, and a video of peers showing their skills in the kitchen.

Photographs

Last photo credit: Ren De Dios, March 4, 2022. @kdedios@linfield.edu

The first seven pictures are what you can see are ingredients and a step by step of Agua Chile. The ingredients are: Shrimp, Cilantro, Serrano peppers, cucumbers, Red Onion, Limes, Salt, and Pepper. This is a recipe usually from the northern coast of Mexico which was made by Jaime Cruz.

The four pictures after is a chicken vinegar stew that is oddly perfect for any season. This dish is also a Mexican dish made by my grandma. This stew consists of Chicken, Bacon, Potatoes, Carrots, Yellow Onion, and Oregano.

Last picture are homemade cinnamon rolls that Ren De Dios made and is the person who provided the picture. She was also kind enough to give me one and it was delicious.

These are the photographs are from students who have cooked on campus and as well one including my grandmas recipe. These are all helpful and healthy dishes anyone can make because of their fast and easy instructions and ingredients. Not to mention, the low cost of it.

Infographics

I decided to provide data of the amount of students who dont know how to cook, if cooked on campus, and if they have a basic idea on what to do in the kitchen. I collected this data by creating a google survey and sharing it. I also decided to make basic cooking tips and a check list of cookware for incoming or returning students living on campus.

Audio

As mentioned before, This audio consists of two interviewees I decided to interview sharing their thoughts, experiences, and journey through cooking. One being my grandma and the other a full-time Linfield student living in the HPA apartments.

Video

This video is a hall event I hosted at my college dorm which people brought their food and got to cook their meal of the day. One resident was kind enough to share her egg and toast recipe. This will be a step by step tutorial and includes information on how dorm kitchens are available for all residents.
